The openSUSE Project has announced the immediate availability for download of the first Beta version in the new openSUSE 13.2 branch.

The OpenSuSE developers have released a new version in their new openSUSE 13.2 branch and it’s full of updates and lots of improvements. The good news is that the devs are now a little bit closer to the final release and this can be easily observed from the versions of the implemented packages.

The openSUSE development cycle was modified a few months ago and changed from 6 to 12 months. This would allow the team to better control the process and to make sure that the final version of the distro is much better and much more stable.

Testing is not only required, it's a must

The devs are trying to provide a great release, but that is only possible if the community gives great feedback by testing the new release and reporting back the problems they found.

"Thing is, Open Source can only be as awesome as the people who work on it! And while openSUSE 13.2 has many, many awesome people working on it, what matters in the end is if it will work for you. There is only one way to make sure it does: test it. Test your use cases and make sure what you need openSUSE 13.2 for will work perfectly. That crazy old system you have set up for your uncle? Test it. That brand new ultrabook of your sister? Test it. That super server you're secretly building in the cellar? Test it. TEST IT ALL!," say the devs in the announcement.

According to the changelog, the Linux kernel has been updated to version 3.16 and the 3.17 branch is targeted for release, GNOME 3.12 is now available by default and the 3.14 branch will be added in due time, Plasma Workspaces 4.11 and KDE applications 4.13 mixed with 4.14 (all will be 4.14) are now available, Plasma 5.1 (will be 5.2, perhaps 5.3) is ready for testing, btrfsprogs is now at 3.16, AppArmor 2.9 beta has been added, and LibreOffice has been updated to version 4.3.1.2.

Check the official announcement for more details about this release. You can download openSUSE 13.2, openSUSE 13.2 GNOME Edition, and openSUSE 13.2 KDE Edition right now from Softpedia.

This is a Beta release, which means that bugs are still present. It's recommended that you don't try this distribution on a production machine.
