Announced by the openSUSE project about seventeen months ago, the openSUSE 11.3 operating system will reach end of life (EOL) on January 16th, 2012.

With regrets, the openSUSE developers, through Marcus Meissner, announced on November 30th that there will be no more updates coming for the openSUSE 11.3 Linux distribution, starting with January 16th, 2012.

Support for openSUSE 11.3 will be officially dropped, which means that starting with January 16th, 2012, the openSUSE project will stop "feeding" the openSUSE 11.3 operating system with security or critical fixes, and software updates.

openSUSE 11.3 introduced features such as Linux kernel 2.6.34, support for the Btrfs filesystem, the KDE SC 4.4.4 and GNOME 2.30.1 desktop environments, X.Org 7.5, X.Org server 1.8.0, new artwork, iPhone and iPod Touch support, OpenOffice.org 3.2, Adobe Flash Player 10.1.53.64, and much more.

openSUSE 11.4 remains supported until September 15th, 2012, and openSUSE 12.1 will be supported until May 15th, 2013. The upcoming openSUSE 12.2 will be released on July 2013.

Existing openSUSE 11.3 users have now the opportunity of upgrading to the brand-new openSUSE 12.1 release, which can be grabbed right now from Softpedia.

openSUSE 12.1 will be supported until May 15th, 2013. The upcoming openSUSE 12.2 will be released on July 2013.

So, support for 12.1 ends before 12.2 comes out? Have I read that right?

Apparently, yes....

openSUSE 12.1 (supported until approximately May 15th 2013)
openSUSE 12.2 (currently in development, to be released in July 2013)

That's a misprint. OpenSUSE releases July, March and November. The most recent release was 12.1 in November 2011. That means 12.2 will be released 8 months later in July 2012.

OpenSUSE doesn't "deal with" Microsoft, or anyone else, for that matter. It's a community-controlled distribution and doesn't deserve the FUD and conspiracy theories that sometimes surround it.

And so Microsoft wins this round.... does anybody still remember the "deal" signed by Novell and MS?

Comment #3.1 by: alcalde on 15 Dec 2011, 02:14 GMT

Novell indemnified themselves from any potential patent attacks from Microsoft. That's hardly a "deal".
