The final testing release of the upcoming OpenSuSE 11.3 has been made available. openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 7, the last milestone build, continues on the path set by the previous milestone and focuses on bug fixing and stability. Considering that the final release is just around the corner, this was to be expected. Still, it comes with a new kernel and a few finishing touches like more translations and revamped artwork.

Milestone 7, a snapshot of the openSUSE Factory ‘work in progress’ build, leading up to openSUSE 11.3 release in July, is now available for download. M7 is the last milestone release, the next release will be RC1 on June 17th. Now, it’s time for testing and bugfixing!,” Andreas Jaeger wrote in the official release announcement. “Compared to M6, this milestone brings many bug fixes, an update to Linux kernel 2.6.34 and the integration of software translations and new artwork.

With the announcement, the openSUSE team also revealed the broader plans for the final release. Some of the highlights of the upcoming openSUSE 11.3 include better netbook support with both the KDE environment as well as Moblin. The Btrfs file system will be supported out-of-the-box and can be configured in the install phase.

openSUSE 11.3 will also bundle the open-source Nouveau Nvidia graphics drivers for better graphics support by default. On the desktop front, users will have the option to choose between GNOME 2.30.1, KDE SC 4.4.3, XFCE 4.6.1 and, for the first time, LXDE 0.5.5. There are plenty of other updates to look forward to. openSUSE 11.3 will see just two more release-candidate versions, after which it should be ready for everyday use.
