The openSUSE team is working hard on the new version of their free Linux operating system, scheduled for release somewhere in October, very close to the Ubuntu 7.10 release. They are proud to announce today the third beta version of openSUSE 10.3: "It's my pleasure to announce the availability of openSUSE 10.3 Beta3. This is the last beta release before entering RC phase in two weeks. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this release of openSUSE!" - stated Christoph Thiel. This beta comes with the latest and greatest Linux kernel 2.6.22.5 and countless bug fixes. Let's have a quick look at the changes compared to the second beta:

■ Linux kernel 2.6.22.5
■ libzypp 3.22.1
■ improved package lists of 1-CD GNOME and KDE
■ countless bug fixes in every component
■ reworked concept of language bundles (bundle-lang-* and -lang packages)

Most Annoying Bugs:

■ Registration starts full package management

stack - which takes _AGES_ (zypp cache is not copied from the RAM disk)
■ 10.2 -> 10.3 Update: pattern:zmd cannot be installed due to missing dependencies (To work around this bug, make sure to explicitly refresh/update all patterns on upgrades)
■ kdepim3: various regressions around POP3 -> online update for Beta3 pending
■ setfont breaks first Xserver start -> online update for Beta3 pending
■ grub entry for booting Windows Vista is missing

As usual, the openSUSE team urges users to test this beta release and report back through the openSUSE's bugzilla. The areas that require attention are:

■ libzypp:
- Online Updates with KDE & GNOME openSUSE updater
- Update from old distros
- using different external repositories
■ language support: try to install and use your language
■ 1-Click-Installation from software.openSUSE.org
