ooVoo has announced availability of its free video chat service on iOS platforms, confirming that the app has already become one of iTunes’ top ten free apps. The latest version lets you call up to five friends or family members anywhere on their computers or compatible portables.

Currently the number one social networking app ahead of Facebook, Skype and Twitter, ooVoo is not like most alternative video chat offerings.

“Connect to your friends and family anywhere, anytime with live video to their computers and compatible mobile devices,” say the developers at ooVoo.

Video chat calls can now be initiated between up to six users from PC to iPhone, to Android devices, to Mac and any web browser.

The cross-platform app now features free 6-way multi-party video chat supported by the latest iDevices.

Users can call up to 5 friends, as well as write instant messaging and place voice calls to ooVoo contacts.

“It’s clear that ooVoo users are defining the social video category using ooVoo to move beyond one-to-one video calls. Instead, ooVoo users are ushering in a new form of communication allowing more people to connect in more places, on more devices and share more experiences,” said Philippe Schwartz, CEO of ooVoo.

“The iOS launch furthers our mission of providing a cutting-edge, hipper mobile and video chat service allowing for more simultaneous users on every platform – Android, PC, Mac, the Web, and now iOS,” added Schwartz.

For those looking to employ the service between an iDevice and a Mac, the requirements are:

iOS: compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad; requires iOS 4.0 or later.

Mac: Power Mac G5 (1GHz) or Intel Mac with 256MB of RAM; 20MB Hard disk space; Mac-compatible Webcam and Headset; Broadband connection (Cable, DSL etc..); Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6 and up).
