OnePlus is prepping a middle-range device

So we’ve been going back and forth telling you that, by the end of the year, Chinese device maker OnePlus is expected to launch another smartphone, which so far we have speculated will be called the OnePlus mini.

Specs of the alleged device already surfaced in benchmarks not so long ago, revealing that the phone might arrive with display resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a MediaTek Helio X10 chipset under the hood.

Well, this week a report coming out Gizmo China reveals a different side to the story we’ve been telling you so far. According to industry sources familiar with the matter, the next OnePlus device will be marketed as the OnePlus X.

The OnePlus X will be sleeker than the OnePlus 2

On top of that, we’re told that OnePlus has redesigned this intermediate device in order to make it more aesthetically appealing. A few days ago, an unannounced OnePlus device did show up online showcasing a design divergent from all other OnePlus device. It also had a dual-camera setup of sorts. It’s also supposed to nestle a fingerprint sensor on the back.

The current report also provides us with a window on what to expect from the OnePlus X. The phone will apparently have a 5-inch display, so it will indeed be the mini version of the OnePlus 2 (and OnePlus One for that matter). Interestingly enough, the phone is said to be launching with a Snapdragon 801 out of the box.

The Snapdragon 801 is no longer the chip du jour, as it was used to power last year’s flagships, but nevertheless, it remains a decent piece of silicon. We would have expected OnePlus to maybe make use of a Snapdragon 615 processor instead, which is characteristic of upper mid-rangers, like the OnePlus X is trying to be.

A few days ago, an OnePlus official revealed that the pricing of the next device coming from the company would be somewhere between $182 / €162 and $300 / €267. Hopefully, the Chinese company will find a way to price the phone competitively, in order to attract as many customers as possible.

Last but not least, we’re told we should expect to see the OnePlus X arrive on the market as soon as next month, meaning October. Are you excited?
