Flagship killer OnePlus 3 will be in the spotlight

After intense promotion and anticipation alike, OnePlus finally unveiled the OnePlus 3 yesterday at an interesting event held entirely in virtual reality. While the device truly stole the show at the launch, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau also stated in an interview that the company will not be continuing the OnePlus X line.

OnePlus has launched four handsets so far, showing that smartphone manufacturers don’t need to release an abundance of products in order to stay relevant on the market.

With that in mind, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed during the event that the company wouldn’t be continuing the OnePlus X line of affordable smartphones, according to Engadget. The CEO said that they wished to focus on just one “true flagship” line instead so that they could strengthen their foundation on the market.

The long-term plan for market consolidation will include merging OnePlus’ development resources for the global Oxygen OS and the Hydrogen OS, which is only available in China for now. The CEO said that an announcement would be made later this year.

At the time of launch, OnePlus X had satisfactory reviews

OnePlus X didn’t necessarily steal the spotlight at the time of its launch, but that doesn’t mean that the smartphone wasn’t received well. The mid-range handset carried a price tag of under $300 and had a 5-inch AMOLED display, Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 16GB internal storage.

It was a safe bet for fans who wanted decent specs at an equally decent price. However, the company doesn’t seem interested in continuing the OnePlus X line in 2016, but a flicker of hope always remains for next year.

Dubbed the “flagship killer,” OnePlus 3 is available on the manufacturer’s website without invitation and will go on sale at multiple pop-up events held around the world today.
