The smartphone could be sold as Black Midnight model

OnePlus is one of the first companies to launch a new flagship smartphone that packs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 processor, the other one being LeEco. When the OnePlus 3T was launched last year, many fans wondered why the Chinese OEM decided to introduce the flagship so close to the previous OnePlus 3 model.

Well, it looks like OnePlus wanted to take advantage of the fact that no new flagship with Snapdragon 835 processor will be launched on the market until April. As many of you probably know by now, Samsung has dibs on the chipset, so Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 CPU won't be widely available until late April.

While OnePlus 3T is selling like hot cakes, other companies like LG, HTC and Sony are just readying their flagships for prime time. In order to boost the 3T sales and raise the hype around its current flagship, OnePlus plans to launch another version of the device, or a completely new phone.

Earlier today, a wallpaper that's been added to the OnePlus 3T with the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat beta update has been published by Evan Blass.

The message that comes with the wallpaper is a bit cryptic, though we believe it refers to the fact that OnePlus will launch a new device.

The Black Midnight model could go on sale in the coming weeks

That new device might be in fact a different version of an existing product, like for example a jet black model of the OnePlus 3T.

Since the wallpaper is only available on the OnePlus 3T, it makes sense to assume that a new version of the phone will be announced soon.

In the same piece of news, AndroidPolice's David Ruddock hints to a dark color of a OnePlus product: “I hear OnePlus could have a dark announcement some time soon. That it might even be as Black as Midnight?”

The statement suggests the upcoming OnePlus 3T will have a “Black Midnight” color. Aside from that, we don't expect any changes in terms of specs.

OnePlus is expected to introduce another flagship later this year, but an announcement won't go live until the second half of the year.
