OnePlus’ Carl Pei wants to learn smartphones from Samsung

OnePlus is one of those Chinese startups that managed to create a name for themselves in very little time. The company has only two products available for purchase so far, the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2, but as we told you not so long ago, they are also prepping the OnePlus X mid-range product scheduled to be unveiled this month (possibly).

Well, OnePlus CEO Carl Pei likes to get all friendly with the company’s fan base and often shares some of his ideas through the official OnePlus blog. Since a few weeks ago Pei himself apologized for the company screwing up the OnePlus 2 launch (the invitation system still doesn’t work properly and a lot of customers are still waiting to get their hands on the phone), the official is taking the opportunity to talk about finding ways to improve their business model.

And Pei has come up with a pretty wacky idea of how to tackle this aspect: he wants to be an intern at Samsung. Since the Korean tech giant has been running its behemoth business successfully for the past 77 years, Pei feels that he has much to learn about the smartphone business from said titan.

OnePlus+Samsung and all their powers combined

“Running a company that does so well, for so long, with such a wide range of products is an astounding feat by any measure. They’ve shipped hundreds of millions of phones around the globe through a multitude of sale channels, you can’t help but admire their operations,” he writes.

In return for Samsung accepting him in their loving arms, Pei says he could also provide some of the expertise he accumulated while setting up the whole OnePlus affair, because currently Samsung clearly needs it, given the “less than stellar” last few quarters.

It appears that Pei is making a real proposition here, and if Samsung were to take him up on his offer, it would certainly make for a very interesting combo. Apart from his experience at OnePlus, Pei also served in the marketing department at Nokia, Meizu and Oppo, and worked as director of new markets for the latter for nine months before deciding to found OnePlus and focus all his energies there.
