iPhone 6 prototype shows up for auction on eBay

Good news for Apple fans who are looking for an iPhone that would help them stand out from the crowd: a one-of-a-kind model has just been posted on eBay and can be yours for as low as $4,999.

The iPhone you see here is believed to be a prototype of the iPhone 6, so it comes with no FCC logos, serial number, or IMEI on the rear case, but instead features the familiar look of all the other models that are part of this generation.

What truly sets it apart in terms of looks is the red Lightning port, which, according to the eBay post, has the serial number C39NW00KG876.

Still in good condition

As 9to5mac notes, the most special thing about this device is that it runs SwitchBoard, which is supposed to give more freedom to users who are into hacking and debugging (something that, as we all know, is pretty much impossible in the public version of iOS).

SwitchBoard is an internal set of solutions developed by Apple, which it installs on prototypes and devices before they hit the shelves and are being used for diagnosing and fixing bugs that the company might discover. Apple is the only one that has this custom firmware containing Switchboard and other diagnostic utilities, so whenever such a prototype hits the market, it’s available at a price that only few are willing to pay for an otherwise regular iPhone.

According to the eBay poster, the prototype is in good condition, and he purchased it from a friend, but no other details regarding its origins have been provided.

The last time such an iPhone prototype reached the web was in October 2014, when another iPhone 6 was put up for auction, with bids going as high as $100,000 before eBay removed the page without providing any reason. Apple most likely asked eBay to do it, so there are chances that this could happen in this case too.
