Android 4.4 KitKat is still the most widespread version

Google usually releases its updated distribution numbers for Android every month, but in July the search giant abstained from doing so. Nevertheless, in the first few days of August, Google is back and flaunting the fact that the Android Lollipop adoption has increased pretty steadily.

The newest statistics show that 15.5% of Android devices are currently running Android 5.0, while 2.6% are powered by the latest Android 5.1 version. Adding these figures up, we can conclude that Google’s latest OS can be found on approximately 18.1% of the Android devices out there. So basically, one in five Android devices is now running Lollipop.

Last time Google posted its Android distribution numbers, only 0.8% of the devices had Android 5.1 Lollipop on them and the 5.0 version ran things on board 11.6% of them. Which amounted to 12.4%.

Older versions continue to exist

Now, moving on to older operating systems, Android 4.4 KitKat still holds the highest percentage, with 39.3% of the Android devices still making use of this particular version. Still, the growth compared to June is pretty insignificant, when KitKat had a hold of 39.2%,

Next in line after KitKat we find the devices with Android 4.1 to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, which together amount to 33.6% of all Android models currently on the market.

Moving on, Gingerbread 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 was shown to hold dominion over 4.6% of phones and tablets running on said platform. Last but not least, we have Ice Cream Sandwich (which covers Android versions from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4) that still runs 4.1% of the devices, and Froyo (Android 2.2) which takes up 3%.

Next month we’re probably going to see Android 5.1 Lollipop gain even more marketshare as more devices running this particular operating system get unveiled. For example, we’re anticipating an avalanche of such products to flood the market as the IFA 2015 tradeshow starts in Berlin, Germany, in early September.

On the other hand, Google is expected to roll out the final version of Android M sometime around October, so we’re going to see a new entry make an appearance in the statistics soon enough.

The Nexus 5 (2015) made by LG and the Huawei Nexus are poised to be the first devices to appear on the market with the OS on board.
