The other day, news broke and took the Internet by storm that popular British boy-band One Direction was calling it quits in March 2016, so the 4 remaining members could pursue solo projects. They were calling it an indefinite “hiatus,” but few actually believed the part about them getting back together again in the future.

Bandmembers Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson have broken their silence to address the report and help the loyal fans, the so-called One Directioners, come to grips with reality, which isn’t even half as bleak as reported: they aren’t breaking up, but they will be taking a break.

Niall promises One Direction will return

In a series of tweets posted just a short while ago, Niall addresses the ongoing rumors about how One Direction is breaking up starting March 2016, saying that there will be a hiatus, but it will only be temporary.

In other words, they’re taking a break, which they more than deserve seeing how they’ve been recording and touring for the past 5 years, ever since they came together on X Factor in 2010. They will also be pursuing solo endeavors, but they will remain part of One Direction.

Niall also urges the fans not to rush into feeling sorry that they will be absent for a while, because the fun times have just begun: the band will release a new album this year, their first as a 4-piece after Zayn Malik’s departure, and they will continue to include new songs on their upcoming tour.

That One Direction isn’t breaking up is also confirmed by Louis Tomlinson on Twitter, so that should make the fans happy.

But really, what does this mean?

Despite these assurances, there still are many voices online saying that this hiatus will mean the end of One Direction in its current, 4-member form.

For these skeptics, the mere fact that the boys tried to keep the break a secret and only confirmed it after word had gotten out is “proof” that the plan is to take time off to see how their solo careers go.

No one could blame them for wanting some time off, especially since they’ve been working non-stop ever since they launched on the scene, but if their plan is to go solo, this hints at their desire to not be part of the group anymore.

Zayn left the band in March this year, and his departure could be seen as the first sign that the infamous boy-band curse had already struck.
