Work on Windows 10 Redstone 2 advances and Microsoft has just shipped build 14926 to insiders enrolled in the fast ring, and now the firm is getting ready to make a change targeting systems still running super-old Windows preview builds.

Dona Sarkar, the chief of the Windows Insider program, reminded that today old Windows 10 build reach their expiration dates and recommended users to upgrade to the latest builds as soon as possible.

And while this is just a recommendation for the time being, moving to newer builds will become mandatory on October 15, as computers running builds with a September 15 expiration date will stop booting completely.

Starting today, these builds will begin showing build expiration notifications once a day, while on October 1, they will start rebooting automatically every 3 hours. Eventually, on October 15, they will stop booting, so users will have no other option than to upgrade to newer builds or to quit the Windows Insider program and switch to the stable version of Windows 10.

Redstone 2 coming in spring 2017

The just-released Windows 10 build 14926 expires on May 1, 2017, so once you move to this version, you’re completely safe for the next 7 months.

By that time, Microsoft could also introduce the final version of Windows 10 Redstone 2, so with a little luck, we could be able to update to a new stable release of the operating system before this build expires.

Although Microsoft has never revealed the release date of Windows 10 Redstone 2, people familiar with the firm’s plans indicated that the target is spring 2017, so the debut should take place early next year.

In the meantime, work on Redstone 2 advances quite nicely, and users who want to be part of the program should really upgrade to the latest builds because they bring awesome new features and improvements that have a big chance of making their debut for everyone in the stable version.
