NVIDIA makes sure its flagship tablet is secured

By now, you’re probably aware of all the fuss created around the Android-bound Stagefright vulnerability, which reportedly affects a whopping 95% of devices running version 2.2 to 5.1.

The exploit can be delivered to owners of Android devices by virtue of a simple multimedia text.

But even if a lot has been said about the Stagefright vulnerability and Google and its partners have promised monthly security fixes and a patch for the problem, we are yet to see an ultimate solution. Security patch updates are important, but even so, there’s no guarantee that an Android device will be safe from attacks.

Samsung, Motorola, LG and other such handset makers have already rolled out or announced they will be delivering Stagefright fixes to their respective devices.

Well, this week, NVIDIA has also announced that it will be releasing the update for its gaming-oriented Shield Tablet. Still, we should mention that the new software piece doesn’t contain any new features for the device, so its only job is to patch the system’s Stagefright vulnerability.

NVIDIA Shield Tablet getting patched

The official change log says that owners of the Shield Tablet can expect to see stability and performance improvements, system wide optimizations and fixes, improved battery performance, and Netflix playback as well as a SHILED Wireless Controller Firmware update.

As it is customary with these updates, the new one will become available in stages, so some owners of the tablet might be getting the Stagefright-fighting patch sooner than others.

If you are tired of waiting, you could take the proactive approach and check for the new update manually by going to the Settings app, tapping on “About Device,” hitting “System Updates,” then selecting “Check for Updates,” and then see if anything new has popped up.

The NVIDIA Shield Tablet was launched back in 2014 and continues to be the company’s flagship device. The model arrives with an 8-inch display with 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution and a Tegra K1 processor under the hood (of quad-core variety).

The tablet also features a 5MP/5MP camera combo and originally shipped out with Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box. Since then, NVIDIA has updated the slate to Android Lollipop.
