Due to faulty batteries that can overheat

Nvidia has recently announced that customers who purchase its SHIELD tablet can now download and install Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, which is the last version of Google's operating system.

Along with that has come a surprising announcement aimed at SHIELD tablet owners who purchased their devices between July 2014 and July 2015.

According to Nvidia, the battery in these tablets can overheat and pose a fire hazard, which is why the company has confirmed that it will be replacing all these tablets.

“NVIDIA is asking customers to submit a claim for a replacement device. NVIDIA is also asking consumers to stop using the recalled tablet, except as needed to participate in the recall and back up data. Consumers will receive a replacement tablet after registering to participate in the recall,” explains Nvidia.

Check your battery model to see if your tablet needs to be replaced

Keep in mind though that the recall only applies to tablets with a certain battery type. So, in order to verify if you're eligible to exchange your tablet for a new one, here is how you can identify the unit's battery type.

From the Home screen in Android, make sure you select the Apps icon. Tap on the Setting icon and scroll down to select About tablet. Then, choose Status and you will be able to see under the “Battery” category a code that should be either Y01 or B01.

If it's B01, then your SHIELD tablet is not affected by this issues and does not qualify for recall, so you're safe with it. But if your battery is Y01, your tablet needs to be replaced. If that's the case, then simply tap on Y01 code to launch the recall application on the device.

But before that, make sure you have the latest software running on your tablet, which should also include that recall application. The latest software should be dated July 1, 2015, or newer.
