Users start reporting issues with KB4088787

A certain number of users running Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607) on their systems are now reporting issues with the cumulative update shipped by Microsoft as part of the March 2018 Patch Tuesday cycle.

At this point, issues with cumulative update KB4088787 don’t seem to be widespread, but one of our readers told me that this particular patch also fails to install on their Windows 10 computer. A quick search on Microsoft’s Community forum returned another such report, so it’s pretty clear that while the issue exists, it doesn’t hit too many systems.

“We have tried to run this update several times. We just ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter which fixed all the other problems. This is the last one that will not go through. It is not giving an error code, it is just saying ‘can not finish update’. When I clicked on the ‘fix this issue’ it said downloading again however it just stalls out,” one user explains.

No known issues

At first glance, this appears to be the typical behavior of a cumulative update that’s failing to install. In these cases, the update screen shows that changes are reverted before the system is brought back to the desktop, with the update then reoffered for install.

Microsoft says the company “is not currently aware of any issues with this update,” but it remains to be seen how many users report such failed installs.

As I reported yesterday, Windows 10 Fall Creators Update cumulative update KB4088776 also fails to install, but in that case, there are many more reports of similar issues. KB4088776 also comes without any known issues, and according to Microsoft, it should install correctly on all systems.

I’ll continue to keep an eye on reports for issues with cumulative updates, and in case you see such bugs on Windows 10, make sure you let me know by posting in the comment section below.
