We thought that last month’s chart would be the last to include Froyo, but we were wrong. Google wanted to start the year fresh and removed Froyo from the latest distribution numbers. It’s no wonder considering that the operating system only held 0.1% of all Android-running phones.

The latest report reveals that Android 7.0 Nougat grew 0.1% to 0.5%, while 7.1 Nougat holds 0.2% of all Android-running smartphones. This is the first report to include 7.1 Nougat, as last month’s numbers revealed the percentage only for 7.0 Nougat.

The number for Nougat is expected to raise in the next months, considering that more and more smartphone makers will be upgrading their phone models to the latest Android version, including Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge on January 17.

Lollipop is found on most Android-running smartphones

This month’s distribution numbers also reveal that 6.0 Marshmallow rose to 29.6% from 26.3% during the last month of 2016. Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop had a combined share of 34% last month and this number dropped 0.6% in January’s report.

Moving on, KitKat recorded a slight drop of 1.4% compared to last month, now holding a share of 22.6%. Jelly Bean reaches a share of 11.6%, down from 12.8% last month. Ice Cream Sandwich also decreased to 1.1%, while Gingerbread also dropped 0.2% to 1.0. The latter Android OS version will be the next to go considering that Froyo was eliminated from the chart. Google drops Android OS versions that hold a share lower than 0.1%.

Google collected the numbers for this month’s distribution starting December 6, 2016 and until January 9, 2017. The share of phones running Nougat won’t increase exponentially over the coming weeks, considering that the majority of high-end and mid-range phones still ship with 5.1 Lollipop or 6.0 Marshmallow.
