HMD, Nokia’s parent company, today signed a partnership with ZEISS that will help improve the performance of smartphone cameras on the company’s future Android devices.

Nokia 9 is very likely to be the first phone to include Zeiss optics, though there’s a good chance the collaboration between the two companies would include more than just a single model.

Nokia and Zeiss started working together in 2004, developing the camera technology that eventually launched on the Nokia N series. Furthermore, the collaboration continued with Windows phones, with several Lumia models featuring Zeiss optics, including the well-known Lumia 1020 that sported a 41-megapixel PureView camera with Zeiss tech.

Nokia 9 to feature dual-camera setup

The two companies haven’t provided any details as to when Zeiss optics could make it to the market on Nokia’s Android phones, but Arto Nummela, CEO of HMD Global, says phone cameras will become one of the firm’s key focuses, suggesting that Nokia 9 won’t be the only model benefitting from the partnership.

“Collaborating with ZEISS is an important part of our commitment to always deliver the very best experience for our customers. Our fans want more than a great smartphone camera, they want a complete imaging experience that doesn’t just set the standard but redefines it. Our fans expect it and, together with ZEISS, we’re delivering it – co-developed imaging excellence for all,” he said.

Recent speculation indicated that the Nokia 9 could feature a dual-lens camera with Zeiss optics, and a teaser that the Finnish company itself published suggested that this could indeed be the case.

Rumor has it that the Nokia 9 might be equipped with two 13-megapixel cameras, one of which would be a telephoto lens similar to what we’ve seen on the iPhone 7 Plus. There’s no confirmation on this so far, so just take everything with a pinch of salt for the time being. But the partnership with Zeiss certainly opens the door to such tech, so expect the next Nokia models to feature truly advanced cameras.
