Nokia 5 already offered this month’s security patch

Nokia has already released the September 2017 Android security patch for the Nokia 5, becoming the first Android OEM to start updating its devices this month, beating even search giant Google which owns the operating system.

Google has most of the time been the first, or at least one of the first, to ship security patches to Nexus and Pixel smartphones every month, but this time Nokia managed to move a lot faster and publish the update for its Nokia 5.

Details are missing for the time being, but a screenshot posted by NPU confirms that this is the “Update Google Security Patch 2017-09,” with the exact size of 142.1 MB. A security bulletin is not available just yet, but it should go live soon, most likely when Google starts the September update cycle for its own devices.

All Nokia phones getting Oreo

HMD Global, the parent company of Nokia, has promised to release Android 8 Oreo to all devices currently launched under the Finnish brand, including the low-end Nokia 3.

While no timing has been provided, the company says that no device would be left behind, as it struggles to keep the entire lineup fully updated and become one of the first manufacturers to make new software available for its customers.

Nokia devices come with a clean version of Android that features only small tweaks and the nearly-stock ROM is available on all phones, with HMD promising to keep the experience bloat-free on future models as well.

For the time being, there’s no target date for the release of Android 8 on Nokia devices, but given the fact that the parent company struggles to be one of the first companies shipping the new operating system to its own smartphones, this shouldn’t take too long. So we’re betting on December 31 as a target for all Nokia smartphones to get Oreo.
