14 DAY TRIAL // The Nokia 9 is receiving some quiet upgrades behind the closed doors ahead of its public launch, with HMD Global reportedly killing off the 4GB version of the upcoming device.
Originally projected to launch with just 4GB RAM, the Nokia 9 might in the end come with 6GB or even 8GB RAM, if we are to trust a new filing with the US FCC (Federal Trade Commission) spotted recently.
HMD tells the FCC that it renames model number TA-1004 to TA-1012, explaining that there’s no difference in terms of design or construction, hinting instead that a RAM upgrade is possible.
Snapdragon 835, 5.3-inch display
Today’s finding comes only a few days after the Nokia 9 was spotted in a new set of benchmarks, confirming that the device is indeed likely to be upgraded to 6GB or 8GB RAM.
Leaving side the RAM upgrade, the Nokia 9 is still supposed to come with 5.3-inch display and be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, which is also running on Samsung’s Galaxy S8. The display will be protected by 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass and feature a resolution of 1440x2560 pixels.
As far as storage goes, the Nokia 9 will come with at least 64GB, while for cameras, HMD seems tempted to adopt a dual-lens configuration similar to what Apple offers on the iPhone 7 Plus, with a mix of a 13-megapixel and 2-megapixel sensors.
Unlike Apple, however, Nokia 9 will still come with a headphone jack, a feature that’s no longer available on the iPhone. An USB Type-C will also be offered for all connectivity purposes, including for charging, with fast charging very likely to be supported as well.
Android 7.1.1 will be the operating system powering the new Nokia 9, though the device will obviously support an upgrade to Android O when it becomes available.
The Nokia is projected to launch in the fall of this year, possibly at IFA in September, though such details are yet to be confirmed by HMD itself.
