14 DAY TRIAL // In a surprising move, Finnish company HMD Global revealed its first Nokia-branded smartphone. The name of the phone has been rather weirdly chosen, as the device will be available on the market as Nokia 6.
The bad news is the Nokia 6 will be exclusively available for purchase in China. Customers will be able to pick this one up via China's JD.com retailer for just $245. If you wonder why HMD has chosen China as the first market to get a Nokia-branded smartphone, here is the company's explanation.
“The decision by HMD to launch its first Android smartphone into China is a reflection of the desire to meet the real world needs of consumers in different markets around the world.
“With over 552 million smartphone users in China in 2016, a figure that is predicted to grow to more than 593 million users by 2017, it is a strategically important market where premium design and quality is highly valued by consumers.”
Spec-wise, Nokia 6 is a mid-range smartphone that will ship with Android 7.0 Nougat operating system right out of the box. It's fully made of aluminum and features thin bezels on the right and left edges of the screen.
On the inside, the device is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory (expandable via microSD). There's also a 16-megapixel photo snapper on the back, which features PDAF (phase detection autofocus) and LED flash.
Nokia 6 comes with dual-SIM support and fingerprint sensor positioned under the physical Home button. It also packs Dolby Atmos sound with stereo speakers, along with Bluetooth 4.1 and LTE connectivity.
Also, the smartphone sports a 5.5-inch display with full HD (1080p) resolution, and it's powered by a decent 3,000 mAh battery.
HMD Global is expected to unveil a couple more Nokia-branded smartphones next month at Mobile World Congress 2017 trade fair.
