Don’t expect the Surface Phone to see daylight anytime soon

Microsoft will hold the Build developer conference and another hardware event on May 23 in Shanghai, only a few days after the May 2 education party where the company announced Windows 10 S and the Surface Laptop.

With rumors now pointing to new hardware coming at the May 23 event, it seems that more people are tempted to believe that the Surface Phone is just around the corner, as Microsoft’s CEO himself recently reiterated the company’s commitment to phones.

And yet, this isn’t true and the Surface Phone won’t be coming anytime soon, with the May 23 conference more likely to witness the introduction of a new Surface Pro model, rather than a smartphone.

If it’s actually on Microsoft’s roadmap, the Surface Phone won’t see daylight sooner than the fall of this year or the spring of 2018, though this is pure speculation and Microsoft could at any point decide to hold back the release for as long as it needs.

New Surface hardware coming in Shanghai

On the other hand, new Surface hardware is indeed expected on May 23, but sources are hinting that Microsoft doesn’t necessarily plan to launch a new-generation Surface, but only a hardware upgrade to the existing Surface Pro 4.

In other words, the new hardware prepared for May 23 might actually be a refresh for the Surface Pro 4, with new chips, more RAM and storage, plus a possible 4K screen. These are all improvements that were expected on the Surface Pro 5, but at this point, just a hardware upgrade seems to be more likely than a new-generation model.

Without a doubt, however, the Surface Phone is just not ready at this point. On the other hand, with Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella confirming that phones are still on the table at the company, it’s all just a matter of time until the Surface Phone arrives.

Unfortunately, without any specifics available at this point, it’s all just a big struggle to stick with Windows phones until the Surface Phone sees daylight.
