Free version is limited in terms of branding, customization

Nextcloud released last month the second major update to its Outlook Add-in for the Nextcloud self-hosting cloud server, and now they're announcing a free-as-in-beer version of the plugin for home users and small businesses.

The Nextcloud Outlook Add-in version 2.0 brought a lot of goodies to the table, including support for HiDPI (High Dots Per Inch) displays, guidance for first-time users, as well as branding options, but it was only available to enterprise users willing to pay to install the add-on on their Nextcloud servers.

During this time, many Nextcloud users appeared to have asked the Open Source company to release a limited-in-functionality version of the Outlook Add-in, which they will be able to use on their personal computers at home or if they own a small business.

"We realize this leaves out home users and small enterprises. Nextcloud strives to provide private cloud solution for everyone so, in that light, we worked with our partner to provide a free version of the add-in for home," says Nextcloud. "Note that the free version is only meant for home users and small organizations."

New functionality is implemented in the free version

While the free version of Nextcloud's Outlook Add-in comes with all the core capabilities of the enterprise edition, such as the ability to share things from your Nextcloud instance instead of sending large, non-secure attachments, it features new functionality that's not yet available for enterprise customers.

These include an improved design that's closer to the original Nextcloud one, the ability to pause an upload, the ability to use centralized configuration parameters for the Nextcloud Server URL, automatic upload of all attachments that are bigger than a certain size to Nextcloud.

But it has its limitations too, as it won't automatically upload an attachment on your Nextcloud server, will not allow you to share a link using a custom password, and it clearly won't allow any rebranding or customization, things that are possible in the enterprise version of the plugin.

All these goodies will also be available in the enterprise edition through an upcoming, smaller update, but now home and small businesses can download Nextcloud's Outlook Add-in for free and install it on their servers. And it looks like there's also an open-source and free Mozilla Thunderbird add-on available that does the same.
