In a public announcement, Collabora Productivity informed us today, December 20, 2016, about a new, exciting feature that was recently introduced by the Nextcloud 11 self-hosting cloud server system.

Last week on this day, Nextcloud announced the release of Nextcloud 11, the latest stable and most advanced version of the ownCloud fork that users can easily transform into a safe home for all of their data. Two weeks ago, the enterprise-ready cloud document suite Collabora Online 2.0 was released, bringing collaborative editing.

And today, both Collabora Productivity and Nextcloud are proud to introduce a new functionality that most of you will fall in love with, namely collaborative editing from a shared public link. In other words, you'll be able to view and edit documents stored on a Nextcloud server even if you don't have an account there.

"Until now, usage of Collabora Online in Nextcloud was restricted to users with a Nextcloud server account. Nextcloud 11 introduces a new feature of sharing links that allow viewing and editing of documents on a Nextcloud server," reads today's announcement.

Collabora Online needs to be installed on the Nextcloud server for this to work

As one might have expected, the latest version of Collabora Online 2.0 must be installed on the respective Nextcloud 11 server for the collaborative editing from a shared public link functionality to work. Then, the person who has a Nextcloud account will be able to share a public link to a document that anyone else can view and edit.

Of course, the editing will happen in real time, based on the permissions provided by the respective Nextcloud user. Additionally, it is possible for external users to edit all the documents contained in a folder publicly shared by a Nextcloud user who has access to the public link.
