Though this isn’t what you expected on the mobile front

Windows Phone (or Windows 10 Mobile if you wish) is often described as a dead mobile platform, mostly because of Microsoft’s strategy that basically comes down to saying nothing about its future plans, which in turn does nothing more than to create more uncertainty in the community.

And yet, it turns out Microsoft is actually working on some new features on the mobile front, though they’re not exactly what the majority of users out there expect.

Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc revealed in a tweet, without providing any specifics, that “the team is working on delivering some features for enterprise customers later this summer.”

In other words, yes, new features are coming, but no, they won’t be aimed at consumers, but only at enterprises. In fact, the enterprise has become a priority for Microsoft and it makes sense for the mobile business to be heading in the same direction, but on the other hand, this means the company is more than likely to abandon the consumer side of the mobile market.

The Surface Phone

And unsurprisingly, the Surface Phone is the next thing that comes to everyone’s mind, especially given that Microsoft reiterates its commitment to the mobile platform on every occasion.

There were rumors that the Surface Phone would be a device mostly focused on enterprises, and given today’s news, there’s a big chance this is true.

Previously, sources familiar with the matter indicated that Microsoft was pondering several versions of the Surface Phone, including one specifically aimed at enterprises, plus a more affordable model for consumers. It’s not known if this is still the case or the push is all-in on enterprises, but it remains to be seen whether Redmond still sees the consumer market as a priority.

The next major update for Windows 10 Mobile is coming in September as Redstone 3, though in the case of phones it’s likely to be less exciting, with fewer improvements on the radar at this point. The update is currently flagged as feature2 as part of the Insider program, with no new features delivered since development as part of the RS2 branch started.
