Critics say that Jake Gyllenhaal was snubbed for an Oscar last year even though he delivered one of the most solid performances of the year in the thriller “Nightcrawler.” If buzz around his upcoming project, “Southpaw,” is anything to go by, he might get another chance.

“Southpaw” is written by Kurt Sutter (“Sons of Anarchy”) and directed by Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”). It was initially written with Eminem in mind for the role of the boxing champ who sees everything fall apart when his wife is killed, but scheduling issues made it impossible for him to do it.

Eventually, Eminem settled for doing the OST and producing the film, which landed Gyllenhaal as lead. This is the role for which he famously trained like a boxer 6 hours a day every day and packed an insane amount of weight in muscle mass, as you can see in the trailer below.

This new preview is shorter than what we’ve seen so far but includes new footage from the film. It also showcases a new Eminem track, a collaboration with Gwen Stefani called “Kings Never Die.” It was actually released in full before the official “Phenomenal” music video last week.

If you like what you see, keep an eye out for “Southpaw” in theaters, as it’s scheduled for release on July 24.
