More powerful than some high-end desktop GPUs

After the successful launch of the GTX 980Ti gaming graphics card, NVIDIA works to continue its success row on the mobile market with a new GPU built for laptops.

Rumored to appear in September, the new NVIDIA flagship GPU codenamed N16E-GXX has an unknown graphics processor and available memory. However, we can speculate that it will arrive with either the GM204 GPU, like the current GTX 980M, or the brand new GM200, while packing 2500 cores.

Although we aren't sure whether it will be of the 384 bit variety like the GM200, it's sure to assume it will be at least 256 bit by disabling 4 memory controllers.

According to German website NotebookCheck, the new N16E-GXX will apparently have a variable TDP between 100 and 185W and its performance will depend on the cooling solution users will adopt. Also, due to its high power consumption and cooling capacity, it is very likely that the new chip will not use an MXM Module but would rather be soldered on the mainboard.

Apparently, the news came from the Chinese notebook manufacturer Hasee, whose CEO announced in a conference that the new GPU might be named 990M and would be as strong as a 980M SLI.

No regrets, no apologies

Just like many big actors in the IT industry, NVIDIA will hold nothing back when it comes to bringing top-end GPUs to mobile platforms, and putting the GM200 card on laptops and notebooks instead of the old GM204 will bring improved performance and lower power consumption, with much better ratio than what many desktop graphics cards are enjoying right now.

In theory, the new GM200 990M will bring more cuda cores than present desktop graphics cards like GTX 680, GTX 760 and GTX 960.

Together with the recent announcement that Intel will soon bring unlockable Skylakes on laptops, this piece of news from NVIDIA only makes us wonder what sort of incredible machines laptops might become in just a year or two.

Although no person in their right mind would ever think about battery life with such specs on board their laptops, it is worth mentioning that with such announcements, IT giants aren't trying the slightest bit to revive a dying PC industry, as they're wholeheartedly moving towards the high-performance mobile platforms with absolutely no regret.

UPDATE: In addition, although announced to be released somewhere at the end of the year, preorders for the future 990M seem to be already online at CEG-Hardcorecustom for €1,755 ($1,951).
