A few months have passed since Samsung launched the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge flagships, which means that the South Korean smartphone manufacturer is working on a new model in its highly successful series.

As in previous years, Samsung has a tendency to launch variants of flagship phones, like the Galaxy S6 Active and Galaxy S5 Sport to appeal to users who are looking for more durable and budget-friendly smartphones.

Samsung’s latest device, dubbed the Samsung SM-G880, appeared on Indian import and export site Zauba. The website doesn’t offer much information, but it does reveal the device is for “R&D Purpose & Evaluation & Not for Retail Sale.” This would mean that the phone is either heading towards testing or that it will soon appear in certification records.

The Galaxy S7 was model G930, the S7 Edge was G935 and according to recent benchmark tests, the Galaxy S7 Active is called model G891. Rumors say the upcoming phone could be the successor to Galaxy S5 Sport, which was Samsung model G870. This indicates that the upcoming G880 will be the Galaxy S7 Sport, but that has yet to be determined.

It could be the Samsung Galaxy S7 Sport

The Zauba website also offered information on the price range, as revealed through the customs value declaration. Thus, the G880 could carry a price of approximately $477 (€ 421), placing the phone in the thin line between flagship and mid-range smartphones.

Considering the price difference between Active and Sport ranges, the new G880 could in fact be the Samsung Galaxy S7 Sport. It is said that AT&T will be selling the Galaxy S7 Active in the U.S., which would mean that Sprint could end up with G880 as Galaxy S7 Sport.

While Zauba listings do offer some hints on phones that manufacturers are currently working on, it doesn’t provide any guarantee that they would actually be released on the market. But all rumors point to the fact that the Samsung Galaxy S7 Sport will see the light of day in the near future.
