Debian Project, through Salvatore Bonaccorso, has announced the availability of a new Linux kernel security update for the Debian GNU/Linux 8 "Jessie" stable operating system series.

According to Debian Security Advisory DSA-3804-1, a total of nine kernel vulnerabilities discovered recently have been patched in the new kernel version that's now available for installation in the stable repositories of Debian Jessie. "Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel that may lead to a privilege escalation, denial of service or have other impacts," said Salvatore Bonaccorso.

These are CVE-2016-9588, CVE-2017-2636, CVE-2017-5669, CVE-2017-5986, CVE-2017-6214, CVE-2017-6345, CVE-2017-6346, CVE-2017-6348, and CVE-2017-6353. You can click on each one to read the announcement posted on the Debian Security Announce mailing list if you're curious to know how they affect your Debian GNU/Linux 8 installations.

All Debian Jessie users need to update to kernel 3.16.39-1+deb8u2

If you're using the Debian GNU/Linux 8 "Jessie" operating system on your computer(s), you need to update to kernel 3.16.39-1+deb8u2 as soon as possible. To update, simply use the Synaptic Package Manager application or the APT command-line package manager to install all the available updates. Once everything is installed, reboot your machines for the new kernel version to take effect.

The Debian Project recommends all users to upgrade their Linux kernel packages immediately to fix all those security vulnerabilities and keep their installations secure and safe at all times. We always advise users to keep all of their applications and operating systems, on all devices, up to date, so take the time to verify for new updates at least once a day.
