The audio connector might survive after all, leak suggests

As it usually happens when new iPhones are about to hit the market, contradictory reports make it to the web on a regular basis, and now we have a photo that claims to show that the upcoming iPhone 7 could come with an audio jack after all.

Before anything, here’s some background on this. Earlier this year, people with knowledge of the matter revealed that Apple wanted to make the next iPhone thinner and one potential way to do that was to eliminate the audio jack and replace it with a Lightning connector serving multiple purposes.

Several sources confirmed this plan and it actually made sense: without the traditional audio jack, the next iPhone would have more room for new components, including what some people believed to be dual speakers.

The audio connector might survive

A photo posted by Chinese website MyDrivers (Google Translate version) claims to show the circuitry of the iPhone 7, including what seems to be the traditional jack. This means the port might actually survive Apple’s overhaul of the iPhone and might continue to be available on the next-generation model coming in September.

If this is accurate information, it could be a sign that Apple has changed plans to make the iPhone thinner or the company has found a different way to accomplish this goal.

Rumor has it that the 2017 iPhone could be a bigger revamp of the iPhone lineup, so if the audio connector makes it to this year’s model, then it might actually be replaced with all-purpose Lightning port for the next upgrade.

It goes without saying that there are a lot of uncertain things right now and nothing should be taken for granted. For what it’s worth, Apple’s promising exciting upgrades for the next iPhones, but it’s not yet clear whether the removal of the audio connector is among the changes that the company is planning or not.

More information should probably emerge in the coming months as we get closer to the rumored and very likely September release date of the iPhone 7.
