Spoiler alert: the 16 GB iPhone will still be offered

Apple’s planning some storage upgrades on the upcoming iPhone 7 lineup, and previous rumors indicated that the company was aiming to offer a 256 GB version of the device, most likely exclusive to the Plus versions.

And according to a new leak coming from China via leaker Steven Hemmerstoffer, an iPhone with 256 GB of storage will indeed be offered, and so will be a dual camera option for at least one model.

Sources have told us that the legitimacy of these photos could not be confirmed, so for the moment, it’s very clear that we should take everything with a pinch of salt.

But it goes without saying that having a 256 GB version of the iPhone does make sense, especially because there’s no microSD card option and 128 GB is no longer enough for those who shoot videos in 4K, take live photos, or simply want to store a large collection of pictures on their device.

Dual camera also coming

And there’s one more reason a storage upgrade is necessary. Just like these alleged screenshots show, the iPhone 7 is expected to come with a dual camera, and it’s obvious that photos shot with this camera will be larger and eat up more space on the phone. So a storage upgrade is needed to allow users to store more photos, especially given the fact Apple doesn’t seem to be very keen on embracing a microSD card support option anytime soon.

At the same time, however, Apple will also continue to offer the 16 GB version of the iPhone, which makes very little sense especially if it’s coupled with a dual camera. You barely get 11 GB of available storage on a 16 GB model, so if you record a few-minute-long 4K video and shoot a bunch of photos, you’re out of space.

If this leak is accurate, then the future iPhone 7 will come in 16GB, 64GB, and 256GB storage options, so Apple not only doesn’t plan to offer a 32GB version but it also wants to remove the 128GB model completely. Certainly, there’ll be more changes to discover on the iPhone 7, so we look forward to the September launch event.
