The GNOME Project has released a new milestone of the upcoming GTK+ 3.18 GUI (Graphical User Interface) toolkit that will be used in the anticipated GNOME 3.18 desktop environment, as well as other OSes, including Mac OS X.

According to the internal release notes, which we have attached at the end of the article for reference, GTK+ 3.17.6 adds several GtkFileChooser improvements, such as support for handling ., / and ~ in the location entry, the ability to activate without using double click, keyboard navigation enhancements in save mode, as well as removal of recursive search in remote locations.

A missing lazy loading optimization was brought to the GtkFontChooser component, an API (Application Programming Interface) was added to full-screen on a certain monitor, and the handling of window states before it's mapped enhancements are now part of the GtkWindow component, and support for font features on tags was added to the GtkTextView component.

Furthermore, the GtkInspector component is now capable of presenting Wayland display and monitor information, as well as of storing selected objects during rescan of the object tree, the gtk-demo component received more examples, theme and CSS redraws caused by inappropriate style changes have been reduced, and there are several improvements and bugfixes to the HighContrast theme.

GTK+ now includes more OS X improvements

In addition to the changes mentioned above, the new GTK+ 3.18 milestone brings more improvements to Apple's OS X operating system, such as implementation of a notebook tab drag and drop functionality, and fixes for HiDPI (High Dots Per Inch) icons, window shadows, and maximization.

There are approximately 40 fixes implemented in the GTK+ 3.17.6 release, but probably the most important of all is the reimplementation of copy/paste functionality across multiple screens. The Catalan, Czech, Greek, Hebrew, Polish, Portuguese, and Slovak language translations have been updated.

You can download the GTK+3.17.6 sources right now from Softpedia, but please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version. Thus, we do not recommend installing it on production machines, as it may contain unknown issues that could lead to crashes and other issues.
