The developers of the openSUSE-based GeckoLinux operating system announced on January 25, 2017, the availability of new, updated versions of all supported editions.

GeckoLinux Rolling 999.170124 and GeckoLinux Static 422.170124 editions are now available for download, shipping with the recently released Calamares 3.0 graphical installer, which adds countless fixes and improvements over the 2.4 series used in previous versions of GeckoLinux.

The old yast2-live-installer makes a comeback in the updated GeckoLinux Rolling and Static spins, which are based on snapshot 20170123 of OpenSuSE Tumbleweed, as well as openSUSE Leap 42.2. An important bug that prevented the Linux OS to boot correctly on certain machines has been fixed as well, along with other identified issues.

Budgie 10.2.9 desktop environment now available

Today's GeckoLinux Rolling 999.170124 and GeckoLinux Static 422.170124 editions also come with the Budgie 10.2.9 desktop environment, as well as all the latest security updates and package versions from the upstream openSUSE and Packman software repositories.

GeckoLinux is currently offered with the GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, LXQt, Cinnamon, MATE, and Budgie desktop environments. A "Barebones" edition is also available for both Rolling and Static editions, allowing power users to fully customize the operating system for their needs.

Of course, there's no need to download any of these new ISO respins if you're already using GeckoLinux on your personal computer. All you have to do to keep your GeckoLinux installation(s) up to date is make sure that all the latest security and software updates are installed.

But if you want to install GeckoLinux on a new PC, we recommend downloading the GeckoLinux Rolling 999.170124 and GeckoLinux Static 422.170124 editions with the desktop environment of your choice from the project's website or via ours, whichever suits you best.

Users of the GeckoLinux Rolling or Stable Budgie edition are being informed that they might need to add a special repository when the Budgie 11 desktop environment is released. Otherwise they won't be able to update using the current repos. You'll be informed as soon as the new Budgie 11 repo is in place.
