It’s been years that Dr. Dre’s fans have been waiting for his third and final solo studio album, the one formerly known as “Detox,” and time and time again their hopes were crushed. “Detox” never came, even though it had been in the works since 2001, but it could be that the fans might still get some new Dre music.

Even better, if what Ice Cube is saying is true, this could actually happen this week: on Saturday, August 1, 2015, Dre will be releasing a full studio album. Brace yourself, this could be huge!

Album is inspired by “Straight Outta Compton” OST

Ice Cube was on Power 99 some hours ago (video below), and he spoke about his and Dre’s work on the unofficial biopic “Straight Outta Compton,” which opens in US theaters on August 14.

According to Ice Cube, Dre did a bit more on the film than just consult on the story, produce and oversee the soundtrack, with that last part being a logical step in a production that details his NWA story: he also came up with an album inspired by the film.

From what Ice Cube is saying, it sounds like this album is separate from the official OST, which will include original tracks and remixes.

“He’s dropping something on August 1,” the rapper says. “It’s mega. It’s Dr. Dre. It’s what everybody’s been waiting for. It’s definitely a dope record, and he’s dropping it all on the same day. It’s crazy.”

Fans will get what they’ve been waiting for, probably

So, it sounds like Dre is coming back as a recording artist at long last. That is, assuming Ice Cube isn’t deliberately blowing things out of proportion to drum up interest in the film.

While a new Dre album would certainly be welcomed warmly by fans, chances of it actually dropping aren’t looking that great, industry voices are saying.

It’s more likely that Ice Cube is exaggerating and teasing fans to get more publicity for the film than it is that Dre actually has a new album just waiting to be released. At best, he will be putting out the official OST on August 1, which, even though might include 1 or 2 new tracks, would still not qualify as new material.

Still, it’s better than nothing, right? Here’s the video of Ice Cube dropping this seriously amazing piece of news (or not) in the radio interview. Jump ahead to past the 10-minute mark.
