Report reveals changes planned for iPhone SE 2

Apple is expected to take the wraps off the second-generation iPhone SE at WWDC the latest, but according to a new report, the unveiling might take place as soon as May.

Japanese site Macotakara writes that a case maker source indicated a new-generation 4-inch iPhone could debut in the coming weeks with some welcome upgrades, but also with changes that’d bring it in line with the other models currently available.

First and foremost, Apple will upgrade the CPU from the A9 to A10. The original iPhone SE comes with an A9 chip that’s also being used on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, so with the second generation, Apple aligns the 4-inch iPhone with the iPhone 7, which uses the A10 processor.

No headphone jack

One unsurprising change is the removal of the headphone jack. The new iPhone SE is very likely to come without the traditional audio connector, which is no longer available on the latest-generation iPhones either. The headphone jack was discontinued on Apple smartphones with the release of iPhone 7, so with this upgrade, the iPhone SE would also give up on this still-popular feature.

It’s also believed that iPhone SE 2 could come with wireless charging, but reports in this regard are rather contradictory for the time being. Wireless charging would require the iPhone SE 2 to use a glass body, but previous speculation indicated that Apple was more likely to stick with aluminum, like on the iPhone 7.

Given that the iPhone SE 2 is likely to adopt iPhone 7’s processor, using the same body materials is also possible, and this means that a glass body, and therefore wireless charging, is less likely.

It remains to be seen how much of this is true in the coming weeks, as Apple is believed to be very close to launching its new 4-inch iPhone. The WWDC conference is scheduled for June 4.
