Report claims an updated iPhone SE is on its way

Apple is planning several big changes to its upcoming iPhones, but there’s a chance that its 2018 lineup won’t include only the models projected to go on sale in the fall.

A second-generation iPhone SE is also expected, and a Chinese report indicates that there’s as big chance the company calls it iPhone SE 2. Very little is known at this point, but it’s speculated the device would still feature a 4-inch screen and be manufactured by Wistron in India.

The plan appears to be selling the iPhone SE 2 worldwide, despite only being made in India, and according to the same report, shipments should kick off sometime in March.

While there’s absolutely no sign from Apple that a new iPhone SE is indeed in the works, this release date does align with the original launch date of the first model in March 2016.

Hardware improvements

The iPhone SE was Apple’s solution to an important share of its userbase sticking with old hardware just because they loved 4-inch phones.

The device was thus supposed to appeal to customers who didn’t want a bigger phone, but at the same time, to bring new hardware supporting the latest versions of iOS, all at a more affordable price.

The iPhone SE has never been a super-successful device, but it did its job very well, especially at a time when people were moving to bigger phones. There’s still confirmation that a new model is on its way, though it makes sense at this point given that many people still love 4-inch devices.

A healthy dose of skepticism is recommended when reading this report because there’s always a good chance it’s not accurate, despite the fact that many details align pretty nicely. If the iPhone SE 2 indeed goes live, the focus will probably be on hardware, with the classic iPhone 4-based design to be retained.
