Netrunner Linux Becomes Maui, Now Based on KDE Neon and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

The Netrunner development team is pleased to announce the immediate availability for download of the first stable release of the Maui, their new GNU/Linux distribution based on the KDE Neon project.

Netrunner is a popular distro based on the famous lightweight and highly customizable Arch Linux and Debian GNU/Linux operating systems, and until today, it was distributed as Rolling (Arch-based) and Desktop (Debian-based) editions. Maui is the new name of the Netrunner Desktop flavor, which has been rebased on KDE Neon.

KDE Neon is also a relatively new project, available as both a layer that can be added on top of an existing Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system and an independent OS downloadable as Live ISO images shipping with the latest KDE Plasma desktop environment and applications, based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

"This is the continuation of the full-desktop version of Netrunner," reads the announcement. "The biggest underlying change has been rebasing Netrunner on Kubuntu to Maui on KDE neon (Xenial LTS). That means Maui will now be receiving continuous updates and support until the next LTS in 2018."

Here's what's new in Maui 1 "Aurora"

Dubbed Aurora, the first stable release of Maui, version 1, is now available for download via our website and includes lots of up-to-date GNU/Linux technologies and software projects, among which we can mention KDE Plasma 5.7.3, KDE Applications 16.04.3, KDE Frameworks 5.24.0, Qt 5.7.0, Mozilla Thunderbird 38.6.0, and VLC Media Player 2.2.2.

Additionally, Maui 1 "Aurora" comes with the latest Mozilla Firefox 48.0 web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird 38.6.0 email and news client, LibreOffice 5 office suite, VirtualBox 5 virtualization software, Gmusicbrowser 1.1.15 audio player, and Kamoso 3.2 webcam viewer. Under the hood, Maui 1 is powered by Ubuntu 16.04's Linux 4.4.0-36 kernel.

Again, please keep in mind that Maui is an LTS (Long Term Support) operating system that will receive security patches and software updates from upstream (Xenial's repos) until the year 2018, during which time the team will also release updated ISO images with the latest of KDE Plasma software, approximately every 3 or 4 months.
