It looks like the Solus developers weren't the only ones working hard on the next version of their Linux-based operating systems, as the Netrunner team was happy to announce on the first day of 2017 the immediate availability of Netrunner Desktop 17.01.

Dubbed Baryon and rebased on snapshot 20161211 of the upcoming Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating system, Netrunner Desktop 17.01 comes as a drop-in replacement for the previous release, namely Netrunner Desktop 16.09 "Avalon," announced approximately two months ago and based on the Debian GNU/Linux 8.6 "Jessie."

"Netrunner Desktop 17.01 'Baryon' has jumped from Debian Jessie to snapshot '20161211' of the upcoming Debian Stretch," reads the release announcement. "This means the system can be kept on a certain version stack, while it is also easy to enable the corresponding repositories for continuously tested updates."

Powered by Linux kernel 4.8, ships with KDE Plasma 5.8.2 LTS

While Netrunner Desktop 17.01 "Baryon" is now using the Debian Testing repositories, most of the pre-installed applications are not at their latest versions at the moment of writing the article. As such, the ISO snapshot is powered by Linux kernel 4.8 and ships with KDE Plasma 5.8.2 LTS desktop environment.

Netrunner Desktop 17.01 also includes the KDE Applications 16.08.2 software suite, KDE Frameworks 5.27.0 collection of add-on libraries for Qt 5.7.1, which is included by default, as well as the Mozilla Firefox 50.0.2 web browser and Mozilla Thunderbird 45.3.0 email and news client.

The Netrunner Desktop software collection consists of the usual applications like VLC Media Player, Kdenlive, GIMP, LibreOffice, Transmission, Audacious, Skype, InkScape, Steam, VirtualBox, and Krita. To enable the "Debian Rolling" functionality, users are urged to check the first entry in the repositories list as shown below.
