The developers of the Ubuntu-based Netrunner Linux distribution have announced the immediate availability for download of the second point release of their LTS (Long-Term Support) version of Netrunner 14.

According to the brief release notes, Netrunner 14.2 LTS is based on the latest Kubuntu/Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS (Trusty Tahr) operating system, which means that it inherits its 3.13.0-62 kernel packages and it's running the KDE4 Software Compilation desktop environment.

Besides all of the security patches, bugfixes, and software updates from the upstream Ubuntu/Kubuntu 14.04.3 LTS OSes, the second-point release of Netrunner 14 LTS comes with the recently announced Mozilla Firefox 40.0.3 web browser, as well as with the Mozilla Thunderbird 31.6.0 email and news client.

Users are being informed by the Netrunner development team that the Mozilla Thunderbird software included in the 14.2 LTS release has been injected with the Plasma Integration patches. Also, you should notice a new default window decoration in Netrunner 14.2 LTS, called Carbon.

"The Netrunner team is proud to announce the release of Netrunner 14.2 LTS – 32bit and 64bit ISOs. This is the second point-release based on KDE4 SC and comes with the latest updates and fixes. [...] Those who are running 14.1 can upgrade with a normal software update via muon or apt-get," reads the announcement.

Existing Netrunner 14.1 LTS users can update now

Existing Netrunner 14.1 LTS users can upgrade to Netrunner 14.2 LTS right now by applying all the updates that have been released through the official channels in the last days. Of course, you can also update manually from a Terminal by using the "muon or apt-get" commands.

As for those of you who are new to Netrunner and want to take it for a test drive, we recommend downloading the Netrunner 14.2 LTS Live CDs for 64-bit and 32-bit computers right now via Softpedia, or you could grab the rolling-release version of the operating system, Netrunner 2014.09, or Netrunner 16, which features the KDE Plasma 5 desktop.
