NetOS 8.0.2 comes only a couple of weeks after the release of the 8.0 series, which promised to be a worthy alternative to Google's Chrome OS. It offers users greater hardware supported, the latest GNU/Linux technologies, as well as, of course, the ability to run both cloud (web-based) and locally installed applications.
This is the second maintenance release in the series, introducing a few enhancements, the latest software versions, as well as all the security updates that have been released during the month of June 2016. Upgraded apps include Google Chrome 51.0.2704.103, gThumb 3.4.3, Ice 5.2.1, and Webmin 1.801.
There's better UEFI support, VLC replaces Parole
The VLC Media Player software has been added in NetOS 8.0.2 to replace the Parole media player, support for the Docker 1.11 Linux container engine has been improved, along with better UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), Microsoft Surface Pro, and Chromebook Pixel 2015 support.
"Surface Pro support has been improved, as you no longer have to logout and log back in when you detach the keyboard," said Roberto J. Dohnert. "On the Chromebook Pixel 2015 you no longer need an external USB mouse during installation."
Again, NetOS 8.0.2 is a small maintenance update to the NetOS 8.0 series, so there aren't any major features or enhancements added. However, you are urged to update your NetOS installation as soon as possible using either the default graphical package manager or the following commands in a terminal emulator.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
