NethServer 7 RC2 addresses a few bugs and annoyances

Softpedia was informed today, November 17, 2016, by NethServer's Alessio Fattorini about the immediate availability of the second and most probably the last Release Candidate (RC) version of the upcoming CentOS-based NethServer 7 Linux distro.

NethServer 7 has been in development since February, during which it received two Beta and two RC builds that added a large number of new features, new GNU/Linux and server-oriented technologies, as well as all the goodies from the upstream CentOS 7 Linux operating system, on which NethServer 7 is currently based. And today, NethServer 7 RC2 “Gnocchi” is here to address the last remaining issues.

First off, it looks like the skillful developers behind the NethServer project have managed to implement support for short legacy user names by enabling the @domain suffix in both user and group names. They also managed to define an extra option that promises to support both user/group name forms (short, long) while keeping all the data consistent.

"By default, NethServer 7 enables the @domain suffix in user and group names, this new convention confuses the system user, and force to reconfigure his account credentials on any network client," reads today's announcement. "Moreover, some applications require a configuration adjustment and such default is quite different from the previous NethServer version 6.x approach."

NethServer 7 RC2 addresses more bugs and adds improvements

Among other interesting things that landed in today's NethServer 7 RC2 release, we can notice the ability to apply SMB (Server Message Block) file system ACLs (Access Control Lists), along with support for guests to write to a shared folder and improvements to the "Reload" button of the SambaAudit functionality. Moreover, plugins have now been included in the virtual host inline help.

Lastly, the second Release Candidate of NethServer 7 adds the missing inline help in Password policy page, as well as the missing Home directory on RSAT-created accounts.
