NethServer's Alessio Fattorini just informed us today about the availability of the first Beta release of the upcoming NethServer 7.4 Linux server-oriented operating system, which is based on CentOS 7.4 and comes with various improvements.

Coming only a week after the release of the CentOS 7.4 (1708) operating system, which is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4, NethServer 7.4 Beta inherits all the upstream improvements, new features, and updated components. But it also introduces some changes of its own.

Among these, we can mention smoother web navigation experience when using SSL transparent proxies thanks to the latest updates and patches to the Squid caching proxy server, as well as a brand-new "top talkers" page for the Server Manager to track the network usage of hosts via ntopng 3 next-generation ntop.

Beta now available for public testing

In addition to the changes mentioned above, NethServer 7.4 Beta updates the Suricata open-source IDS, IPS, and NSM engine with support for setting up multiple categories rules, along with the ability for the EveBox web-based event viewer to report traffic anomalies detected by Suricata.

"Please take some time to download and try out the Beta and make sure the things that are important to you are working. If you find a bug, please report it. This is a great opportunity for non-programmers to contribute back to NethServer," reads today's announcement.

NethServer 7.4 Beta is now available for public testing, and you can download the ISO image for 64-bit computers right now from our website. If you want to upgrade from NethServer 7.3, though it's not recommended, you can do so by running the following commands listed below in a terminal emulator.

yum clean all && yum update
yum install http://packages.nethserver.org/nethserver/7.4.1708/updates/x86_64/Packages/nethserver-release-7-3.1.ge457d21.ns7.noarch.rpm
