The developers of the Neptune Linux distribution, a Linux kernel-based computer operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux and built around the KDE4 desktop environment, have proudly announced the immediate availability for download of Neptune 4.4.

According to the release announcement posted by Leszek, one of the Neptune developers, the new version of the Linux distribution, dubbed "In Tune," is powered by the LTS (Long Term Support) Linux 3.18.16 kernel, which brings support for new hardware components, and updates the graphics stack with Mesa 10.5.8 and X.Org Server 1.17.

"This brings in support for modern graphic cards and better 3D performance. Old chips like Voodoo or SIS however aren't supported anymore. We updated the HPLIP driver to support newer HP printers," says Leszek. "We improved the user interface by introducing a new modern looking font as well as bigger scrollbars."

As you can see, Neptune 4.4 brings better support for some of the recent HP printers, as well as an improved user interface with a modern look. Additionally, the Kdenlive open-source video editor software has been updated to the latest version available with support for stabilizing videos using the vid.stab add-on.

The latest versions of GIMP and Chromium are included

Furthermore, the GIMP open-source and cross-platform image editor has been updated and it now includes the GMic filters and plugins, the Neptune Installer now benefits from support for UTF-8 characters in usernames as well as support for formatting partitions with the Btrfs file system.

Last but not least, the Chromium open-source web browser has been upgraded to version 43 and it no longer includes the Google Now plugin. The Debian package manager, dpkg, has been updated to version 1.18, and the KDE Volume and Partition Manager software has been added for those who want to manage LVM partitions.

The Snapshot Manager tool has received various improvements as well, offering several new predefined snapshots to users who want to run Neptune directly from the live medium.
