On November 20, 2016, the development team behind the open-source, FreeBSD-based storage NAS (Network-Attached Storage) distribution promoted the NAS4Free 11 series to the stable channel.

NAS4Free 11 has been in development for quite some time now, and it's here to replace the NAS4Free 10.x series. As expected, it's a major update based on the latest FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE-P3 operating system, adding a bunch of new features and improvements, along with several bug fixes and usability enhancements.

Prominent new features of NAS4Free 11 include system RRDGraphs monitoring, new SMB protocols and configuration options, integrity checks for firmware upgrades, new Zend OPcache and APCu modules, FastCGI as default web server, updated config to version 2.8, and updated language translations.

There are also multiple usability improvements to the System|Advanced|Command Scripts, Diagnostics|Information|Space Used, Diagnostics|Information|Mounts, Diagnostics|Information|Swap, Disks|ZFS|Pools|Information, and Disks|ZFS|Pools|I/O Statistics pages. Conversion to XML has been improved as well.

Updated components and translations, bug fixes, and 64-bit support

As expected, NAS4Free 11 also comes with lots of up-to-date components, among which we can mention inadyn-mt 02.28.10, tmux 2.3, zoneinfo 2016h, VirtualBox OSE 5.1.6, sudo 1.8.18p1, GNU nano 2.7.1, Syncthing 0.14.11, iPerf3 3.1.4, Lighttpd 1.4.43, tzdata 2016i, Samba 4.3.12, PHP 7.0.13, and Msmtp 1.6.6.

Among the bugs fixed, we can mention better config for DNS server configuration, better sending of reports, improved exception handling, better support for pools and vdevices with more than ten devices, and improvements to escaped characters in output. Unmaintained translations were deleted and the XMD driver has been removed.

NAS4Free 11 is also the first release of the project to no longer support 32-bit platforms. Downloads are now available only for 64-bit computers as Live USB and ISO images. Additionally, users are being informed not to upgrade their NAS4Free servers running a version before the 11.0.x series.

"We believe that the use of 32-bits versions can not give the end users it's full potential of the OS, for this further development of the (i386) 32-bits architecture has been stopped upon the 11.0.x series. Current 32-bits users are able to use 32-bits 10.3.0.3.xxxx series until their end of life are reached," stated the developers in the release notes.
