The Linux distribution is based on Ubuntu

nOS Infinity is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu that uses the KDE desktop environment. It's built for old and new computers and it's quite different from what you might expect.

People might say that there is already a distribution out there based on Ubuntu that has KDE as the default desktop environment and it's called Kubuntu. nOS is very different from Kubuntu and it all has to do with the way the desktop is planned and designed. Unlike Kubuntu, which has a vanilla KDE experience, nOS has a customized version that should be very interesting for first time users.

It's also worth pointing out that the developers have also replaced the file manager. The default one is usually Dolphin, but they went with Thunar, which is actually a much lighter solution. Numerous changes have been made, so this is actually a rather unique implementation of KDE and Ubuntu.

nOS Infinity is not your average cup of KDE tea

The desktop design is probably one of the first things noticed by the user and nOS Infinity really has something to brag about. It looks like something implemented especially for touch displays or for mobile platforms, but it seems to work just fine for desktop users. Big icons, fast response, and different design is all a distro needs in order to become interesting.

"nOS is designed with easy usability, simplicity and speed in mind. That's why I decided to base the Operating system around KDE and Ubuntu. nOS is designed for first time Linux users. The ones who have come straight from Windows. The KDE desktop interface helps users get around without feeling spooked by command lines and ugly interfaces."

"nOS is built on the strong foundations of one of the most popular Linux Distributions, Ubuntu. Security is something buit right into the foundations of nOS, not just a plastered on afterthought. There are no known viruses or malware that have been developed for latest versions of Linux so you are safe. The Linux kernel has security and stability in its core so no threats will get into your computer but you won't be constantly restricted by security prompts," is noted on the official website.

The developers of nOS Infinity also provide a build for Raspberry Pi, which just might be the first one with a KDE desktop. You can download nOS Infinity December 2014 version right now from Softpedia and give it a try. It's a Live CD and it should work just fine if you want to test it first.
