Redmond starts experimenting with this feature once again

My People is a feature that was originally expected to be released to users in the Windows 10 Creators Update, but for some reason, the company decided to hold it back, most likely until the arrival of Redstone 3 in the fall of this year.

The software giant shipped the first Windows 10 Redstone 3 build to Fast ring insiders on Friday, and although no big changes were spotted at first, it appears that the My People feature is there, only that it’s not activated by default.

A post from Russian website TheCommunity shows that an early version of My People can be enabled in Windows 10 build 16170, though the instructions on how to do that are not available just yet.

My People is a feature that allows users to pin their favorite contacts to the taskbar in order to speed up sharing or communications without having to open dedicated apps. For example, the My People app shows the profile pictures of the contacts you choose and clicking or tapping one of them launches several apps for getting in touch with that contact, such as Mail and Skype.

At this point, the feature is still in its early days, so lots of improvements are still needed, but given the fact that this is only the very first Windows 10 Redstone 3 build, expect My People to evolve more in the coming months.

Coming in the fall to retail users

As for the reasons Microsoft delayed the release of My People in Windows 10 Creators Update, Dona Sarkar, the head of the Windows Insider program, explained that it needed more refinements before getting the go-ahead for retail users.

“As we shared at our event in October, we’re excited to bring your people to the front and center of your computing experience in Windows with the My People experience.  Our goal with Windows is to deliver experiences you’ll love and we’ve made the decision to hold this feature for the next major update to Windows,” Dona said in January.

The Creators Update is projected to launch in the fall, so the target for My People to become available to retail users is now later this year.
