MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2017 kicked off in Barcelona and Canonical is there to showcase their latest developments in mobile, cloud, server, and desktop. Today, the company announced that Dell's Edge Gateway 3000 would be on display at the event.

Powered by the Ubuntu Snappy Core 16 operating system, which Canonical designed specifically for use in embedded and industrial devices, including single-board computers like the well-known Raspberry Pi, the small Dell Edge Gateway 3000 series come in three variants, each one targeted at a specific market.

"Dell Technologies is today announcing the new Dell Edge Gateway 3000 series, at Mobile World Congress 2017," said Canonical. "The latest in the line of its purpose built gateways, the 3000 Series includes three unique models designed to work in both fixed and mobile use cases requiring smaller sensor networks, tight spaces, and simpler analytics."

Ubuntu Snappy Core promises transactional update capabilities

The three Dell Edge Gateway 3000 models that are currently displayed at MWC 2017 are Model 3001 for general-purpose energy management and industrial automation, offering a flexible I/O with a multi-function I/O port and programmable serial ports (RS-485/422/232).

The second one, Model 3002, is designed for logistics and transportation thanks to its built-in micro GPS tracker chip. It supports accelerometers, marine and land protocols for monitoring location, speed and consistency of vehicles, mesh sensor networks via ZigBee, and other MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) devices.

The last one, Model 3003, is engineered for general-purpose IoT (Internet of Things) applications and media use cases, as point-of-sale, video streaming, vending, and many others. It ships with an I/O for graphic displays of up to 2560x1600 resolution, with 3.5mm line-in and line-out audio.

However, the piece of resistance is Ubuntu Snappy Core, which powered all three Dell Edge Gateway 3000 series, allowing transactional updates and state-of-the-art security thanks to the Snap universal package format. Ubuntu Snappy allows companies to quickly deploy software to these gateways to keep them running at all times.

If you're at MWC 2017, don't hesitate to visit Canonical's booth at Hall P3 3K1, where you'll be able to see the new Dell Edge Gateway 3000 series, along with Ubuntu-powered androids and augmented reality helmets. All three Dell Edge Gateway 3000 models will be available for purchase in early summer 2017 in select countries. Pricing starts at $399 USD.
