Now available for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows OSes

The MPV movie player based on the MPlayer and mplayer2 open-source projects that supports a wide variety of video and audio file formats, as well as subtitle types and video codecs, has reached version 0.10.0.

MPV 0.10.0 is an important milestone in the development process of the cross-platform and open-source video player software, which is currently supported on all GNU/Linux distributions, as well as on the mainstream Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

According to the comprehensive list of changes posted on the project's GitHub page, MPV 0.10.0 adds numerous new features, such as uchardet support, support for reading cue sheets embedded in the tags of an MKV (Matroska) file, support for VideoToolbox hardware decoding, and the implementation of the fd:// protocol.

A new display sync mode has been added as well and can be enabled using the --display-sync argument, a wrapper for the libarchive library has been introduced in order for MPV to read compressed archives, there's support for the libavcodec VDPAU API, and the vf_vdpaurb filter has been included for reading back VDPAU decoded frames.

Moreover, MPV 0.10.0 comes with support for HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) in DXVA2, enabling HEVC profiles with the VA API and adding HEVC to the whitelist of hwdec codecs, rotation support has been brought for vo_vdpau, framerate emulation supported has been introduced in vo_null, and there are many improvements to vo_opengl.

Here's what has been removed and deprecated

In addition to the new features mentioned above, MPV 0.10.0 removes various components and functionalities, such as support for DVD and BD (Blu-ray Disc) menus, the youtube-starttime.lua tool, af_dummy, af_convert24, support for the S8, U16, U24, and U32 formats, vo_x11, as well as vo_vaapi deinterlacer. Moreover, the vf_dlopen component has been deprecated.
