MPV developer Martin Herkt released a new stable update of the MPV open-source and cross-platform video player software based on the MPlayer project, version 0.26.0.

Coming approximately three months after the 0.25.0 update, the MPV 0.26.0 release is here to upgrade the VA-API/VDPAU hardware decoding code, which now requires the FFMpeg 3.2 multimedia framework or a higher version, as well as to enable support for C plugins by default.

MPV 0.26.0 also comes with Universal Windows Plaform (UWP) support using the libmpv library. However, it looks like some things were disabled in this new version, including DVB support as it's no longer compatible with older kernels, and the built-in V4L TV support, which can be replaced with av://v4l2.

New HDR tone mapping algorithm, support for OOTFs, and more

Among other new features that have been added in the MPV 0.26.0 release, we can mention the implementation of Mobius by default as new HDR tone mapping algorithm, support for separate decode and display devices for CUDA hardware decoding, and support for SONY's S-Log1 and S-Log2 TRC gamma curves.

MPV 0.26.0 also implements support for Organized Organic Thin Films (OOTFs) and non-display referred content, supports the tone-mapping-param option for the clip command, adds an option in the ytdl_hook script to exclude URLs from being parsed, and introduces the "--tone-mapping-desaturate" parameter.

Lots of other options and commands have been changed, deprecated or removed from the MPV 0.26.0 release, which also fixes tons of bugs that were reported from previous versions of the application. You can study the full changelog attached below if you're curious to know what exactly is new in this release.

We recommend upgrading to MPV 0.26.0 as soon as possible, either by downloading the binary packages for your operating system from the official homepage of the app, or the source tarball for GNU/Linux distributions. Linux users should find the new MPV release on the stable repositories of their favorite distribution in the coming days.
