Windows 10 comes with Edge configured as default browser

Microsoft offers Edge as the default browser in Windows 10, as the company wants to leave Internet Explorer behind and provide users of its new OS with an application that can truly compete with Google’s Chrome and Mozilla’s Firefox.

While Edge still lacks some of the features that are available in its rivals, it’s no secret that other browser developing companies out there have criticized Microsoft for making it too difficult to change the default apps in Windows 10.

Mozilla, for instance, has complained that setting Firefox the default browser in Windows 10 can’t be done with a press of a button, as was the case in Windows 7 and 8.1, but by going to a separate menu in the OS, where users have to manually pick Firefox.

“These changes aren’t unsettling to us because we’re the organization that makes Firefox. They are unsettling because there are millions of users who love Windows and who are having their choices ignored, and because of the increased complexity put into everyone’s way if and when they choose to make a choice different than what Microsoft prefers,” Mozilla’s CEO said in an open letter to Microsoft in late July.

To overcome this, Mozilla has included options to direct take users to this settings screen, and now the company has made another step towards managing the default browser in Windows 10.

Video tutorial

In a video published recently, Mozilla explains how to set up the defaults apps during the Windows 10 install, thus making sure that, when upgrading from Windows 7 or 8.1, the operating system doesn’t change your settings.

Basically, what Mozilla is trying to say is that Firefox can remain your default browser when upgrading from Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10, without having to change settings after installation comes to an end. Obviously, this can be done by managing the default apps in the installer screen, but it’s interesting to see Mozilla creating video guides to show its users how to do it.
